Why Strength Training is so Important for Women
Strength training is important for women for several reasons and the answer is a lot more scientific than this but here are the basics:
Builds and maintains muscle mass: As women age, we tend to lose muscle mass, which can lead to decreased strength, mobility, and independence. Strength training helps to build and maintain muscle mass, which can be preventative but also aid in overall health. Strong bodies are more capable and independent.
Increases metabolism: Metabolism is the process by which our bodies turn what we eat and drink into energy. Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue of the same weight. Increasing muscle mass through strength training can increase metabolism and help women to get and maintain healthy energy balance.
Improves bone density: Bones need to be worked out, too! Strength training increases bone density, which is especially important for women who are at greater risk for osteoporosis. Strong bones will set you up for doing the things in your every day life that you want to do. This is accomplished by spending time on your feet and doing exercises that have appropriate impact for the stage you are now.
Reduces risk of injury: Resilient connective tissue can better support joints and bones, reducing the risk of injury and creating longevity.
Improves mental health: This is the big one, in our opinion. Exercise, including strength training, has been shown to improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. We all know that we feel better when we move out bodies regularly. Strength training, specifically, leaves you feeling powerful and strong. Because you ARE!
Overall, strength training is an extremely important part of creating and maintaining overall health and wellness. This is why we encourage and teach it so much.
