One Step at a Time

I’m sure you have had those moments where you look out into your flower bed and wonder “where did all of those weeds come from?”  Same goes for your life.  You wonder when you got into bad shape, where this injury came from, how your eating habits got so unhealthy….the list goes on.

Once you realize you want those weeds to be gone, you want it to happen immediately.  The task can appear daunting because there is so much to do.

You wake up early and tackle that flower bed. As you work you notice your low back starts to hurt and you have run out of lawn bags.  The job is just too large to do in one day.

It’s the same for your fitness.  When you realize that you want to change your circumstances , you try and do it all in one week.  You quickly realize it was too much too soon.  You become injured, tired and disappointed in yourself.

It doesn’t have to be this hard!  Like the weeds in your flower bed, you didn’t get to where you are overnight and neither did those weeds.  Try taking this huge task and breaking it down into smaller sections.  Divide that flower bed up into 8 sections and go out everyday for 20 minutes and pull all of the weeds you can.

Do you see where I am going with this?

If you break your fitness goals into bite size tasks that you do every day, you will be more successful in the long run.  If your goal is to Run 1 mile, go out everyday and start walking for 10 min/day.  That can slowly build into walking for 1 minute/run for 1 minute for a total of 10min/day.  If you build that skill up slowly you won’t feel overwhelmed and it won’t be such a shock to your current routine.  Its important that you feel like you CAN do those small tasks.  Small changes will equal big wins if you CONSISTENTLY do them.

It’s going to take time to get to where you want to be if you want it to finally stick.  You just have to be willing to take that first step.

Come see us at the gym.  We can help you figure out what those small steps could be for you.  Schedule your complimentary welcome session HERE.  We would love to see you!
